About Community Land Trusts

A community land trust (CLT) is a nonprofit organization that provides lasting community assets and permanently affordable housing to people who are marginalized by the market. Through an inclusive governance structure that puts low-income households in the driver’s seat, CLTs inherently believe in the dignity of low-income families and enact a preferential treatment for the poor.

The CLT model strives to balance what is best for individual families right now with what is best for the community over the long-term. It is a vision with its roots in the teachings of the Catholic Church and in the actions of those involved with the Catholic Worker movement and beyond. In fact, one of the earliest CLTs, Woodland Community Land Trust, was founded in 1978 in East Tennessee by Marie Cirillo, who left the Sisterhood in order to do community development full-time.
